COSTA MESA, Calif. — A California college has confirmed that their baseball coach and family are among the dead in Sunday morning’s helicopter crash.

John Altobelli, his wife, Keri and daughter, Alyssa, were killed in the helicopter crash alongside Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and four others, Orange Coast College confirmed.

Altobelli was the head baseball coach and has been with the college for 27 years.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family. Our hearts are with you,” the college said.

The college said in a statement in part:

“John meant so much to not only Orange Coast College, but to baseball,” says Coast Athletic Director Jason Kehler. “He truly personified what it means to be a baseball coach. The passion that he put into the game, but more importantly his athletes, was second to none – he treated them like family. Our deepest condolences go out to the Altobelli family during this time of tragedy.”

They were heading to a basketball practice in Thousand Oaks. It’s unclear why the helicopter went down.

The NTSB, FBI and FAA are investigating.
