Pasco man allegedly slashes customer with box cutter at Albertsons
PASCO, Wash. — A Pasco man slashed an Albertsons customer with a box cutter early Tuesday because he thought the victim was a rival gang member, according to police.
Officers responded to the Alberton’s on North 20th Avenue and West Court Street around 1:30 a.m. for a report of a man, possibly armed with a knife, chasing another man around the store.
They quickly arrived and arrested 25-year-old Joe Frank Gutierrez for the assault.
Evidence shows that Gutierrez believed the victim, a 32-year-old Pasco man, was a member of a rival gang. Police said there is no reason to believe the victim has gang ties.
Surveillance footage shows Gutierrez taking a box cutter from a display at the store before allegedly slashing the victim from his armpit to his hip, leaving him with a serious laceration.
The victim was bleeding heavily when police arrived. He was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance and is expected to survive.
Police said Gutierrez stole the victim’s iPhone prior to the assault.
Gutierrez was booked at the Franklin County Jail for suspicion of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1.
