Portion of I-84 eastbound closes as officials investigate crash

PENDLETON, Ore. — Traffic has started to back up along I-84 eastbound, just east of Pendleton, due to a crash.

I-84 eastbound has been closed between exit 216 and exit 265 in La Grande due to a crash near milepost 231. Officials haven’t specified the nature of the crash but said no traffic is allowed on that stretch of the freeway at this time.

OR 204 also known as Tollgate Highway is also closed to all but local traffic. ODOT said it is not a viable detour for freeway traffic.

A traffic cam photo taken around 7:45 Friday morning showed traffic coming to a halt on I-84 outside of Pendleton. The crash itself is 22 miles outside of Pendleton on I-84 just east of Deadman Pass. An update from 6:30 AM on Trip Check said drivers should expect the closure to last up to two hours. ODOT cameras showed a snowy roadway.
