Richland extends Benton County jail contract
RICHLAND, Wash. — Richland will extend its two-year contract with Benton County to continue using its jail.
The city is trying to renegotiate its upcoming two-year $400,000 agreement to access the jail, which was set to expire at the end of March, according to City Manager Cindy Reents.
She argued the city used jail bed space only 9,000 times in 2016 compared to 17,000 times in previous years.
Council members agreed to extend the contract to Apr. 30.
Without that extension, city officials would be looking for jail space elsewhere at the end of the month, Reents said.
