Sunnyside car wash shooting appears to be drug-related, police say

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Detectives brought a person of interest into custody at the scene of a possible drug-related shooting that left two people with non-life-threatening injuries near the intersection of E Lincoln Ave and S 6th St.

According to Cmdr. Scott Bailey of the Sunnyside Police Department, the person of interest was ruled out by investigators at the scene of the shooting that took place before 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 4, 2022. This individual was released as police could not find sufficient evidence linking them to this crime.

The victims, two adult males whose identities have not been made public, were brought to Astria Sunnyside Hospital for emergency evaluations and treatment. Cmdr. Bailey confirmed that both of the victims were released from the hospital later that night.

At this stage of the investigation, Sunnyside police officials have enough information to suggest that the shooting was drug-related. They are not clear on whether it was a gang-related altercation, but it has not been ruled out.

Shortly after the incident, Sgt. Jeremy Tucker of the Sunnyside Police Department told KAPP-KVEW there was a group of people seen at the crime scene when police arrived.
