A Walla Walla man suspected of driving under the influence slammed a pickup into a light pole Monday night.

Jonathan Ortega Aguilar, 28, was northbound on 1st Avenue when he drove straight into a light pole at the three-way intersection of Main Street around 8 p.m. The light pole fell and damaged a patio railing at a nearby business, according to Walla Walla police.

The force of the impact caused the man’s pickup to roll on its side. No major injuries were reported, police said.

Witnesses said he was driving at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate the turn onto Main Street.

After interviewing Aguilar, the Washington State Patrol found probable cause to arrest him for DUI. He will also be cited for driving with a suspended license and other violations.
