Two of Washington’s mountain passes are closing for the winter

Two of Washington’s mountain passes will be closed for the winter starting Thursday, Nov. 21.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said the gates to Chinook Pass on SR 410 and Cayuse Pass on SR 123 will swing shut at 10 a.m.

These passes run through Mt. Rainier National Park. They close around this time every year due to avalanche danger, poor road conditions, lack of snow storage and no nearby emergency response services.

Transportation officials made the decision to close the passes in response to this upcoming weekend’s storm forecast.

The passes usually reopen in mid-May to early June.
