University of Louisville drops Papa John’s name from stadium

The University of Louisville announced Friday morning that it is removing the Papa John’s name from its football stadium.

The stadium will instead be known as Cardinal Stadium while the school evaluates the naming rights deal, university President Neeli Bendapudi said in making the announcement, according to The Associated Press.

The change from Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium comes as the pizza chain is removing Papa John’s founder John Schnatter’s image from its marketing in the wake of his admitted use of the N-word during an internal conference call.

Since the news broke, Schnatter has resigned from the school’s board of trustees and as Papa John’s chairman.

Also being renamed is the John H. Schnatter Center for Free Enterprise at the university’s business college, according to the AP.

Several Louisville football players have taken to Twitter in recent days calling for the school to change the name of the stadium, including a suggestion from wide receiver Keion Wakefield to change the name to Muhammad Ali Stadium in honor of the Louisville native.
