UPDATE – Hanford site take cover lifted, no release of chlorine gas confirmed. An alarm at a water treatment facility is believed to have malfunctioned.
ORIGINAL STORY – About 1,000 workers at Hanford have been ordered to take a precautionary take cover after a high chlorine gas alarm went off at a water treatment plant this afternoon.
The advisory has been issued for the 200 West Area and the adjacent 600 Area.
A spokesman for the Department of Energy’s Richland Operations Office at Hanford says maintenance was being conducted today on the alarm and that a field survey is being conducted, but no chlorine at this time has been found.
A field survey is being conducted, however, at this time, the precautionary take cover has not been lifted.
The water treatment plant provides water to the central part of the Hanford site.
