Virgie Robinson Elementary in Pasco Celebrates Namesake’s Birthday
Staff and students of Robinson Elementary School, together with members of the Robinson family, host a special assembly today to honor the birthday of the Pasco school’s namesake, Virgie Robinson.
Robinson was born to sharecroppers Pearlie Lee (Gill) Chambers and Shepherd “Red” Chambers on Dec. 6, 1919 in Memphis, Tennessee. She died in 2003. She was a dedicated volunteer, educator and community civil rights activist who worked for the Pasco School District for many years. Robinson Elementary School was named after her and opened in 2005.
The event included the unveiling of a portrait of Robinson, which family members had painted by Pasco artist and Robinson family friend Jimmy Butts and are donating to the school.
