Walla Walla man fatally shot in Dayton apartment, suspect in custody

DAYTON, Wash. — A Walla Walla man died from a gunshot wound he suffered at an apartment in Dayton, leading the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office to launch an investigation with help from state crime analysts.

According to a press release issued by Columbia County authorities, deputies were dispatched to an apartment on the 100-block of E Washington St in Dayton for reports of shots fired. They rushed to a unit on the second floor, where deputies located a 54-year-old Walla Walla resident who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Medics from Columbia County Fire District No. 3 rushed the victim to the Dayton General Hospital via ambulance. Despite life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital later that evening.

During their initial investigation, deputies determined that there was no further threat from the accused shooter. Shortly after, they transported a 22-year-old Dayton man to the Sheriff’s Office and booked him into the Columbia County Jail for first-degree Manslaughter.

Investigators requested specialized equipment from the Washington State Patrol’s Crime Scene Team. They are helping with the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Columbia County law enforcement has not released the name of the victim as they work to notify the next of kin. They also say they will withhold the identity of the suspect out of concern for his safety.
