Wapato Tamale Festival comes back swinging
WAPATO, Wash. — After skipping a year, the annual Tamale Festival in Wapato came back with a swing, taking over the streets Saturday afternoon.
In just two weeks, a committee of community members rallied together to bring the event back, with tamales, tacos and plenty of sweet treats. The festival also featured a vintage and antique car show.
Wapato resident Kiona Dick was one of the many people who worked hand-in-hand to pull it off.
“We’ve just all come together,” Dick said. “It’s a great group of people … who have their heart and soul here in Wapato.”
Dick said the event is important for the community at large, but also local businesses who get to show off their goods to attendees. She says her favorite part of the festival is the food.
“This year, there’s a lady here making sweet potato pancakes that were fantastic,” Dick said. “It’s just something to bring the town together.”
