‘We’re lucky no one died here’: Semi collides with transit bus, several people hospitalized
KENNEWICK, Wash. — Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a major crash between a semi and a Ben Franklin Transit bus on Highway 395 in Kennewick.
A truck carrying several tons of potatoes blew through a red light at the intersection of Highway 395 and Hildebrant Boulevard around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, colliding into the side of the transit bus.
The truck driver told Washington State Patrol he lost his brakes, causing him to hit the bus without slowing down.
Trooper Chris Thorson said about three or four people were on the bus at the time of the crash, and they were all transported to Trios with injuries. Two of them received serious injuries with possible broken bones.
The driver of the semi and the bus only received minor injuries.
“We’re lucky no one died here, honestly,” Trooper Thorson said.
Cleanup is expected to take at least two hours as crews investigate the crash and pick up potatoes scattered across the road.
Charges are expected to be filed against the semi driver pending further investigation.
