Winter Olympics results: Women’s hockey

The USA women’s hockey team took to the ice Sunday as one of the two teams favored for gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Team USA got off to a good start beating Finland 3-1 in Group A play. But, it wasn’t easy.

The two teams nearly fought to a draw in the first period. But, Venla Hovi scored the first goal of the contest with less than 10 seconds left in the period to give Finland a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Americans kept the pressure on during the second period, with Monique Lamoureux-Morando scoring a second-effort goal with 11:02 left. Less than 3 minutes later, Team USA scored on a power-play as Kendall Coyne took the pass from Hilary Knight and found the back of the net to give Team USA its first lead.

The Americans added an empty-netter by Dani Cameranesi with less than a minute left in the third period.

Team USA has won seven of the past eight world championships but has suffered tough luck at the Olympics, losing the gold medal to Canada in the previous two Winter Games.

American captain, Meghan Duggan, recently told NBC Olympics that the team is “on a mission. We have a job to get done,” she said.

Finland was led by Hall-of-Famer Riikka Valila. At age 44, she officially became the oldest player to compete in women’s Olympic hockey.

Team USA’s next match is Tuesday as they take on the Olympic Athletes from Russia team in Group A play.
