YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. — The Yakima County coroner’s office has identified the victim of a fatal drive-by shooting Saturday as 35-year-old Maria Elena Luna-Corona.

Luna-Corona was reportedly identified using fingerprint recognition, according to a coroner’s office news release Tuesday.

“The Yakima County Coroner’s Office and its staff would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of Maria Elena Luna-Corona,” the release said.

Yakima County sheriff’s deputies say a man was driving west on Interstate 82 with Luna-Corona in the passenger seat just after midnight Saturday when someone in another car shot at them somewhere between exits 31 and 33.

The driver pulled off at exit 26 and parked at the Chevron gas station at 51 Firing Center Road near the Yakima Training Center, where he notified law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.

Luna-Corona was shot and was taken to Virginia Mason Memorial hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver was uninjured.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The motive of the shooting is under investigation.
