Yakima apartment fire forces almost 50 people out of their homes

YAKIMA, Wash. – Almost 50 people are displaced Wednesday after a structure fire at a Yakima apartment complex forced them from their homes.

Yakima firefighters responded about 10 a.m. to reports of a fire in the Chestnut Manor building in one of the apartments.

Yakima fire shift commander Jennifer Norton said the apartment’s resident suffered from facial burns and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at Summitview Church of Christ in Yakima for the building’s 48 occupants. The shelter will provide cots, warm meals and other services for the next several days.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say it appears to be accidental. Damages are estimated at about $50,000.
