Yakima City Council votes 4-3 to lift ban on marijuana businesses
YAKIMA, WA — The Yakima City Council votes 4-3 to lift its ban on marijuana businesses.
The decision came after more than two-and-a-half hours of public comment and discussion, with nearly 30 speakers.
Council members Dulce Gutierrez, Kathy Coffey, Holley Cousens and Mayor Avina Gutierrez voted in favor of lifting the ban.
Councilwoman Carmen Mendez spoke against lifting the ban, prior to casting her vote, other council members had the same opportunity.
“I really don’t have much to say besides the fact that I’ve been against it the entire time, and I will continue to be against it,” said Mendez.
“We can work together to make this a safe thing for everybody,” said Cousens.
Following the vote, the city council voted unanimously to ask the city Planning Commission for recommendations to where marijuana businesses will be allowed.
