Yakima man caught with child porn admits to abusing 5-year-old, police say

YAKIMA, Wash. — A Yakima man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly having and sharing child pornography and sexually abusing a 5-year-old boy.

Daniel Figueroa, 19, was arrested following a months-long investigation by the Yakima Police Department that started in April 2019.

Police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about someone accessing a image depicting child pornography in February 2019. Police traced the image to Figueroa’s email address before locating him at his home on South Eighth Street, according to a probable cause affidavit.

By late August, police gathered enough evidence to obtain a search warrant for Figueroa’s home.

Several detectives showed up at his home on Sept. 3 to serve the warrant and take Figueroa into custody. Figueroa’s mother allowed the detectives inside while the suspect was in bed sleeping.

He was handcuffed and brought to the police station for questioning.

During an interview with police, Figueroa reportedly admitted to watching child pornography involving boys as young as 5 years old. He said he would use apps on his phone to find the images and would store some of them his phone.

He said he would look at child porn every couple days, adding that he knew it was wrong but “could not stop himself,” the affidavit says.

Later in the interview, police asked Figueroa if he’d committed any acts of sexual abuse toward children.

Figueroa replied by saying he has taken several inappropriate videos of a young male relative, including one of himself abusing the boy. Figueroa said he shared screenshots of the video to another man through one of the apps he uses to find child porn, the affidavit says.

On the phone, police found pornography involving children as young as 18 months old.

Figueroa was arrested and booked at the Yakima County Jail on an investigative hold for first-degree child molestation and possessing and dealing child pornography.
