Yakima opens new pickleball courts at Franklin Park

Yakima just opened eight new pickleball courts at Franklin Park. The Yakima Pickleball Club has been working with the city for six months to build the only public courts in Yakima.

Bob Guchee, one of the club members, said he encourages people in the community to take advantage of the new courts. “It’s such a game to play. Four people can just come out here and read the rules or look a little bit online and learn how to play,” said Guchee. “And enjoy the game from the very first time.”

According to Guchee, the game that’s similar to badminton, tennis and ping pong, is the fastest growing sport in the U.S.

The club raised $10,000 and volunteers donated about 600 hours to resurface the old tennis courts at Franklin Park and turn them into the new pickleball courts.

Beginners are welcome to check out the game during the club’s weekly organized play. They meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until noon, and every Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m until dark. Visit their website to find out more about club membership.
