MOXEE, Wash. — A wanted man who tried to flee from Moxee police during a traffic stop ended up in the hospital early Tuesday.

Around 12:40 a.m., an officer pulled over 34-year-old James Reno at a fruit warehouse on Beaudry Road near the Moxee Police Department because he had a felony warrant for escape from community custody.

Police said he was also driving without a driver’s license, and he was supposed to have an ignition interlock device in the car, not to mention he was violating the conditions of his pretrial release for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

During the traffic stop, police said Reno ran away on foot, went into the fruit warehouse where a crew was working, then ran back outside and hopped in his car.

Police said he led officers on a chase that went south on Beaudry to Gamache Road, then back up north on Birchfield Road.

He wrecked his car on Birchfield near Gun Club Road in the Terrace Heights area and ran away on foot again.

Officers requested the assistance of Yakima Police K-9 Zorro, who was able to track down Reno to some bushes a short distance away from the crash.

Police said Reno continued to ignore their commands to surrender, so K-9 Zorro bit him on the leg before officers apprehended the fugitive.

Reno was taken to a local hospital where he required surgery. He will be booked at the Yakima County Jail on several criminal charges plus his warrant.
