Yakima sex offender arrested by animal control officer
YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. — A Yakima County animal control officer arrested a convicted child rapist south of Gleed on Thursday after he swam across the Naches River to escape from deputies.
Kurt Dean Bonser, 56, was taken into custody around 9 a.m. He was booked into jail on a felony warrant for failure to register as a sex offender, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office said they received multiple reports of a suspicious person on the morning of his arrest. They noted that a driver had escaped from police during a vehicle pursuit in Yakima earlier that day.
The first call came from the 8600 block of Cowiche Canyon Road, where someone reported a man hanging out behind a home. However, it was still dark outside and deputies were not able to find the man, according to the release.
Then deputies were called to the 4800 block of South Naches Road for a report of a “creepy” looking man wearing black sweats and a black hoodie. They spotted the man at the far end of Eschbach Park.
As deputies went after the man, they said he jumped into the Naches River and crossed over to the other side by a water treatment plant on Highway 12.
An animal control officer who was near the treatment plant spotted the man and chased after him. After a short foot pursuit, Bonser was taken into custody.
Bonser sustained a cut on his hand from jumping a barbed wire fence. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
The Yakima Police Department, Tieton Police Department and the Washington State Patrol assisted the sheriff’s office in their response.
