Yakima Valley Community College dropping the ‘Community’ from name
YAKIMA, WA — Yakima Valley Community College is dropping the ‘Community’ from its name.
The school’s board of trustees voted to change its name back to Yakima Valley College.
YVCC went by its former name from 1962 to 1977 before changing it to Yakima Valley Community College.
The school says part of the reason for changing its name is because most community colleges in the state that have dropped the ‘Community’ from their names.
In addition, most of the schools no longer offer only certificate or associate degree programs.
In 2012, the Washington State Legislature authorized the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to approve applied bachelor degree programs.
YVCC currently offers a business management and information technology degree.
The name change will take effect June 1.
